Abbas to Visit the Netherlands

12 02 2011

From NIS News Bulletin:

RAMALLAH, 10/02/11 – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is to visit the Netherlands this year. Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal invited him during a meeting on the West Bank.

Abbas was originally to come in June last year, at the invitation of the Dutch government. But this visit did not go ahead due to the fall of the government in February 2010.

Abbas was pleased to accept the renewed invitation, Rosenthal said after the meeting. An exact date for the visit still has to be found.

According to Rosenthal, it is important to receive “one of the big players in the theatre” of the Middle East in the Netherlands. In an even-handed approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it is also important to strengthen relations with the Palestinian Authority, the minister said.

Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders said in a reaction that he hopes Abbas’ visit again fails to go ahead. Wilders does not see the point of the trip and considers that Abbas would be better to go to Jordan, because “Jordan is Palestine.”
