Allegations about the sex life of Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders have led to a a row targeting public broadcaster VPRO. A trailer for a documentary on the controversial Freedom Party leader strongly suggested that he had visited a drug-addicted prostitute.
The documentary makers had claimed that they would neither attack nor praise the anti-immigration politician. “‘Wilders, the movie’ is neither a political pamphlet nor a moralising or demonising statement; it is a portrait of Geert Wilders and his hitherto invisible supporters”, they said in a written statement.
The documentary’s author Pieter van Huystee also wrote, “An unfortunate association was suggested in the movie trailer between Geert Wilders and visiting prostitutes. The producer and VPRO regret this. Because the witness accounts have not been independently verified, they have been cut from the documentary. We distance ourselves from these accounts,” Mr Van Huystee is quoted as saying by RTL Nieuws and Broadcast Magazine.
